Fly Fishing For Trout - A Quiet Revolution

In a new, innovative and well researched approach to fly fishing, Wayne Smith explores the feeding behaviour of both Brown and Rainbow trout -

The feeding behaviour of trout is the sum of two factors:

Firstly, through the fry and fingerling stages, identification of 'Food Recognition Keys' is ingrained as a result of the repetitive feeding pattern of their natural survival instincts.

Secondly, as they get larger, they can manage larger diet items. Supplementary behaviour is learned as a reactive response to the local fauna of the area in which they are hatched or released. Local knowledge is normally of benefit here and this is what we traditionally focus on when fly fishing.

Rather than studying potentially thousands of insects and the flies imitating them, I've found I need only a few patterns, each designed to do a job in the different circumstances encountered on the water.

Trout Flies induce takes by the use of food 'Recognition Keys,' rather than imitation, hence some patterns are given the label 'Exciter pattern', because quite simply, they resemble nothing. Some of the most well known flies world wide bear no similarity to any insect whatsoever.

Trout behavioural patterns vary significantly between species, size and circumstances. Trout habits change during different times of the day. Feeding habits and behaviour change between fast and slow waters.

As in most modes of angling, there is not just one single, simple answer. If there was, it would have been discovered, and been made common knowledge, long ago.

There are many pieces to the puzzle. The more pieces you have to put together, the more the multiplication factor sees your results soar.

The more time you have spent fishing with incorrect or insufficient knowledge, the more time you have spent developing the mindset that the trout is a vastly superior, cunning and unpredictable adversary, and results like mine become seemingly unattainable. Assumedly, they just do not exist.

Of course, when you lack the very intimate knowledge of these fish necessary for such results, the practical reality remains precisely that.

That's not putting anyone down, it takes years of studying these fish, trial and error with different fly patterns, different fishing techniques, different innovative designs and methods with the right focus to get to a place where you understand these creatures adequately for such results.

However, you can vastly short-cut that time by years and even decades, if you were to carry on using the same methods for long enough, just by finding a good mentor with sufficient time to pass on the finer points of stalking trout.

Unfortunately, there are very few experienced anglers with time and resources available to offer that sort of tuition, let alone those who have the skills to even make them eligible to do so.

Fly Fishing For Trout - A Quiet Revolution, focuses largely on the instinctively learned 'Food Recognition Keys.' They enable anglers to catch trout in any location or situation in which they exist. Local knowledge becomes relatively irrelevant.

This also means flies do not need to imitate anything to catch trout. What!?! Say that again.- Flies do NOT need to imitate anything to catch trout (This is not going to make me popular in some circles, but my results speak for themselves and are online for all to see).

Flies can then be tied to counter stream or water conditions, or to counter, and or take advantage of, various aspects of trout behaviour.

That approach has been enhanced by the use of innovative strategies, tactics and trout fly construction, which have dramatically raised the bar on fly fishing success rates.

That experience and knowledge is now being shared in this groundbreaking new publication, specifically designed to give you the edge in your fly fishing.

Thunder Creek Flies: Tying and Fishing the Classic Baitfish Imitations

Thunder Creek Flies: Tying and Fishing the Classic Baitfish Imitations
Based on Fulsher's Tying and Fishing the Thunder Creek Series published in 1973, Thunder Creek Flies is a completely revised edition of the fly-tying classic, with nearly twice as many patterns and striking color photographs by David Klausmeyer to demonstrate the unique Thunder Creek style of tying. New materials and techniques make it easier to create sleeker, better-swimming flies that look and act like real baitfish. With details on constructing the twenty-two freshwater flies and six saltwater designs, descriptions of specific baitfish they imitate, and large glamour shots of each pattern, this book showcases some of the most effective flies an angler can use. Includes step-by-step instructions to tie the unweighted Blacknose Dace Thunder Creek, weighted Emerald Shiner Thunder Creek, Marabou Shiner Thunder Creek, and Silver Shiner Thunder Creek with tail and all the tools you'll need to tie the entire Thunder Creek series.

Big-Game Fishing Headquarters: A History of the IGFA

Big-Game Fishing Headquarters: A History of the IGFA
This stirring historical account chronicles the evolution of big-game fishing and the legendary International Game Fish Association (IGFA), which was founded in 1939 and continues to be the leading authority on sport fishing, as well as the future of the sport. Hundreds of previously unpublished photos illustrate the hotspots visited by early big-game anglers and the types of tackle they used while a basic history of angling is provided for the recreational angler. Biographies of key IGFA personnel—such as Bill Carpenter and Elwood Harry—and their contributions to the group are examined as is the organization’s role during World War II. No other fishing association has been as influential in the sector of the sporting world as the IGFA and their rules and records continue to set the standard around the world.

Fly Fishing ? Where Sport And Craft Combine

There is no sport as versatile or as widespread as fishing. It is a sport that can be undertaken as cheaply or as expensively as you wish. Five year olds in bare feet and overalls can attach a piece of string to a stick, bend a paper clip, and attach a worm and have as much fun as the billionaire fishing enthusiast with a deep sea fishing boat, lines, tackles, rigging, harpoons, shades and champagne. Fishing is a hobby and a living, a sport and a serious occupation.

One of the most popular methods of fishing is fly fishing. Fly fishing is done with a specially designed rod and reel combination that allows the sportsperson to cast their line in the direction of the water and then slowly reel it back in.

Fly fishing is appropriately named. In contrast to lure fishing, fly fishing requires the fisherman to fool the fish into thinking that the fly is one of the fish?s favorite meals skimming along the surface of the water. Lure fishing appeals to the lazy underwater fish, often attracted by shiny metallic objects and enticed to bite on the hook with some piece of edible or edible appearing bait.

Fly fishing is designed to attract fish at specific times of day by their feeding instincts. The lures for fly fishing are called flies, and are in fact a cheaper way to go, generally speaking, than the lures needed in lure fishing. Fly fishers often tie their own flies, using bits of hair and cloth around the house or farm.

Flies are designed to appear as the kind of prey that fish in the specific area are feeding on at a given time. This can include all manner of insects and insect larvae.

Though it rankles on the lure fisher to have it said, fly fishing is a much more challenging form of the sport. The fly fisher must constantly have her arm in motion, casting the line, playing it out and reeling it in patterns made to emulate the movement of the prey species. When a fish is hooked, it takes a skilled fisher to land the animal.

Fly fishing also involves a certain amount of study, in order for the venture to be successful. Fishers must do their research into what kind of species they are hoping to catch, and in turn what kind of species their targets are feeding on. This information can change seasonally, day to day, and even has different applications during different feeding times.

Fly fishing is an excellent way to get outside and enjoy the fresh air while participating in an enjoyable sport and getting some exercise. It takes some practice, but is highly addictive and a sport that never gets old.

We're small, but our products are already making more than a few ripples. By rethinking product design from the ground-up, we've created an impressive line up of fly-fishing storage products and accessories that look great, and outperform anything else available on the market. We started with a few simple ideas: design and create a tippet dispenser, develop an innovative cutting tool or clipper, and reshape the fly storage category with the creation of a series of soft-sided cases and chest packs. Our simple ideas turned into very complex design obstacles and challenged some of the best industrial designers in the country, yet we've succeeded with our vision and created a line of revolutionary accessory products that will stand the test of time. Fishpond is all about design and function . We are the first to bring a functional tippet dispenser to the market-one that stores, straightens, cuts and dispenses tippet material directly from most commercially manufactured freshwater tippet spools. Look for our saltwater version in the coming months. Tired of plastic and aluminum fly boxes? We've also created an entirely new product category with our molded nylon and soft-sided fly cases. With ease-of-use in mind, brightly colored jacquard webbing on the spine serves as a hand strap to securely hold the case while on the water. This gives our cases their signature style and unparalleled function. To keep us on the cutting edge, we're redefining the accessory segment with revolutionary products like our patented, ergonomically designed Titanium Clippers with optional integrated retractor that make competitive tools based on the traditional nail clipper obsolete. Our research has told us that fly-fishing enthusiasts want to lighten their load. In response to this trend, fishpond has created two new chest/fanny packs that can complement or replace the traditional fishing vest. Each product has our signature zip-down "fly bench" with a replaceable foam fly page that serves as a convenient fly changing station and work area. At fishpond, we're committed to staying on the leading edge of fly-fishing product design, and we're already hard at work on the next generation of new products to enhance our position as an emerging leader with our dealer-partners and customers. Fishpond is connected to the past and it's timeless traditions, but its focus is on making designs for the fly-fishing enthusiast that will endure the future. A Passion for Steelhead by Dec Hogan

Based on what Dec learned in 20 years as a steelheader, 15 years of which he guided nearly 200 hundred days a year. It's classic fly fishing for steelhead from A-Z as he saw, lived and taught it. There is something for everyone. From the rank novice to the most seasoned of veteran. Dec covers basic techniques proven on 1000s of steelhead, selecting the best fly for various river conditions, choosing the right tackle for you, effectively covering different water types, learning to spey cast, practical strategies for finding productive streams. 336 pgs. More... No other game fish stirs the passion of the dedicated steelhead fly fisher as does this big sea-run rainbow—whether rising to intercept a dry fly skated across a September tailout on a high-desert canyon river in Oregon, or taking a deeply swinging wet fly on a swollen springtime river in coastal British Columbia. From his longtime base on Washington State's legendary Skagit River, highly regarded steelhead guide and fly fisher Dec Hogan has done and seen it all. Now he brings together a lifetime of solid steelheading experience to write a book which, if not the last word on the subject, is destined to be an instant classic. A Passion for Steelhead will cover all the basic techniques proven on thousands upon thousands of steelhead successfully hooked, selecting the best fly for various river conditions, choosing the right tackle for you, effectively covering different water types, learning to spey cast, practical strategies for finding productive streams by the season, and a fascinating and highly original look at how steelhead take (or refuse) a fly, based on the author's personal observations of more than 1,000 summer-run steelhead movements during nine intense seasons. The book will be filled with the author's own impressive color photography and illustrated with many beautiful pencil sketches of two-handed casting and steelhead taking the fly. Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs

Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs
Trout often prefer underwater aquatic insects because they're more vulnerable than surface stages and are more abundant as well. Fly-fishers know the importance of imitating the specific life stage that trout are feeding on, however most current flies only imitate size, shape, and color of the natural insect. Soft-hackled nymphs also imitate movement and behavior. Tying & Fishing Soft-Hackled Nymphs explains how to imitate sub-surface aquatic insects using both traditional and modern soft-hackled nymphs and flymphs along with the most effective presentation techniques. By exploring effective thread and translucent fur body material combinations, as well as game-bird hackle collars, these flies take on life-like properties. These patterns can be fished throughout the water column from the stream bottom--to imitate immature nymphal forms--to the surface mimicking transitional emergers. Drawing on both traditional and evolved patterns and methods, these wingless wet flies will take you beyond for mulaic fishing techniques to unlimited presentation possibilities and will help you catch more trout.

The Risks of Ice Fishing

Ice fishing is perhaps the most dangerous type of fishing. It contains many risks for the fisherman due to the weather conditions. If you are heading for this eskimo sport anyway, you'd better read carefully through the following tips.

First of all, ice fishing is extremely dependent on weather. This means that before going on the open ice, you need to have supplied yourself with many useful cold-protecting materials. Of highest importance is to have a properly constructed ice shack. The shack can become your only rescue place from the cold outside: ice fishing leads to health problems such as hypothermia if you don't have a warm and cosy shack.

The second thing you need to have in mind before going ice fishing is to carefully check the weather conditions. Walking on thin ice is a beautiful metaphor that can easily become a brutal reality if you don't consult with the weather prognosis. Bear in mind the condition of the ice. Be careful where you put your ice shack, and double check the ice surface before going too far. Ice fishing is dangerous because sometimes winter conditions change too fast. You have to be aware that a winter blizzard would be a lethal possibility. Your shack is not a perfect rescue from all weather conditions, a blizzard may cut your way and you may get stuck in the middle of nowhere in the dreadful cold. When ice fishing, you need to pay special attention to the stove or the other heating device within the shack. Make sure you have enough wood. Take even more than enough to reduce the risk of freezing to death in an unpredicted blizzard. The other rule for stoves when ice fishing is to make sure the heat doesn't thaw the ice underneath. Put your stove on a proper place where no dangers of heating the ice surface exist. Don't stay too long in the open when ice fishing: you have to go into the shack periodically and check if everything is under control. The health risks that ice fishing puts fishermen into, can also be reduced by regularly warming yourself.

If still not dissuaded by these strict safety regulations, you may try ice fishing and discover how enjoyable it can be. It is really fun and exhilarating as long as you have in mind and prevent the things which may go wrong. For more information click Ice Fishing

The Discus fish has its habitat in the South American waters of Brazil and Peru. Discus fish are classified as “grazers”, and in the wild constantly forage for food. Discus are tall, and have a laterally compressed body. Their swim bladder is located on top of the stomach. 5 Powerful Trout Fishing Techniques

Most anglers consider trout as one of their favorite ?fishing friends? while fishing. This artful species is found everywhere. Different varieties of trout choose different types of places as their native habitat.

The territory from Labrador westward to the Saskatchewan is known as the native habitat of brook trout. Rainbow trout are conspicuous in the Pacific slope from Alaska to California.

Brown trout are abundantly seen in the waters of every American state except Texas, Oklahoma, North Dakota, Missouri, Mississippi, Louisiana, Kentucky, Kansas, Arkansas and Florida. Sometimes it has been spotted in the waters of some of these states, but there is no official verification of these citings, according to conservation officials. Brown trout also abound in some parts of Canada.

You need to consider some factors in order to successfully catch trout fish.

1. Do not grease the leader for it won?t sink deep enough to give trouble, when pulling the lure and line from the water. However, if you allow it to float, the shadow cast by it, on the bottom of the stream, may scare away the trout.

2. Trouts can usually be secured through the use of dry fly. You should fish in both the current as well as in the pools for trout. Sometimes, it will be difficult for the angler to keep the fly from dragging or sinking because of the force of the current. The angler will have to depend on his dexterity for this.

3. It is not wise to fish for trout directly upstream as the leader, line, and flies will float directly over the fish. You should make the cast from one side of the stream. This will ensure that only the fly will float over the fish.

4. Remember that the first cast should be the best cast. Usually the first lure presented, is struck by a feeding trout if it floats over his private territory. You should never forget to fish in the lower end of the pool first, even if the trout are coming up in the upper or middle end.

5. On account of being moody or selective, trout may try the patience of any angler. Therefore, a fly or if necessary, a spent-wing fly or a fan wing, may do the trick without much hassle.

Indeed, you can enjoy a lot and have fun while fishing for trout. Following the tips above will definitely ensure a happy catch.

Safety In Fishing

Mix enjoyment and safety for an enjoyable 'get away from it all' fishing trip. Tips for safety in hopes of keeping Uncle Harry and Dad out of the emergency room!

Fishing is a relaxing sport to enjoy with your family and friends on a weekend fishing trip. Of course, it is more desirable to do it safely and be aware of safety rules for everyone's benefit.

It is important to start off a young angler with appropriate fishing gear for their age and size. Most young fishermen (excuse me..and women) find it comfortable to use a 5' or 5 1/2' light action fishing rod with a spin-case reel. A 4 or 6 pound test strength line will work well with a small or medium sized bobber. Dad, Mom or Granparents should stay close by to supervise and help when needed. It has been our experience that the children really enjoy 'doing it themselves' until they get tangled up in a line that went the wrong way!

Here are some tips for the young and the more experienced anglers to remember. Be careful how you carry and cast your fishing pole. Sometimes one forgets the fishing pole is longer than you think and can easily strike someone in the face or elsewhere! Be sure you have plenty of open space around you so you can cast safely.

Be sure to throw any tangled or unused fishing line in the trash. Loose line can be dangerous for the water fowl or other wild animals.

Set a good example for the children and DO NOT use your mouth to tie a knot around a sinker or to place a split shot on a fishing line. You might accidentally swallow it and ruin your fishing trip!

Be careful with those sharp fishing hooks--handle with extreme care! They are sharp, dangerous and could cause serious injury. You really don't want to wind up in the local emergency room to have a hook removed from your hand!

Take care with fillet and pocket knives as they can be more dangerous than hooks. Keep them out of reach around young children (and some adults!).

Other equipment to consider, especially if you are fishing from a boat, is a personal flotation device (life jacket). Do not fish in rivers or streams when they become flooded. Shore fishermen should also wear life jackets in case they should accidentally fall in.

Sunscreen is a must to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. Wear protective clothing and limit exposure to direct sunlight. Also wear sunglasses to protect your eyes.

Use insect repellant to reduce problems with bugs and insect bites. Carry a first-aid kit well stocked with items for cuts and other medical needs.

After all of this advice, remember to have some fun fishing with your family. This is a wonderful time in your life to make memories for your children and grandchildren to look back on in later years.

Fly Fishing Trips for Women

Fly fishing has been considered a mostly male pastime since its inception, but now many women are beginning to turn to this sport for fun, relaxation, and even competition. Many female competitors participate at or above the level of their male peers.

During the years, many men were unsupportive towards women wanting to fish because of the general mentality that women were supposed to stay in the homes, but as time passed more women began fly fishing and several organizations for women were created. Special women fly-fishing classes were created and several guides that only served women appeared. Nowadays, several locations and companies provide women fly fishing trips. They teach women all the techniques necessary to be a successful fly fisher. Women are taught how to handle the rod and move it so that fish will be tempted, how to wheel in the fish once they are caught, what to wear for protection, and general tips for successfully luring and catching fish.

Over the years, many fly fishing competitions appeared that were only open to women, and others in which men and women competed alongside each other in an equal contest. Fly Fishing is no longer only a men's sport, as women from all over the world and all cultures are starting to practice it. Women from all different age groups and backgrounds enjoy the sport. The fly-fishing industry welcomes these women and provides everything possible so that they will continue participating in the sport. Participating in a woman fly-fishing trip is a good way to learn the basics of the sport and get a good idea of the techniques and skills necessary to catching fish.

Fly Fishing Flies

Fly fishing is becoming more and more popular each day. The possibility of anyone can participate at an equal level, be they young or old, male or female, gives it popularity and accessibility that is not found in all sports. Two aspects of fly fishing are vital. The technique and equipment must both be proper before people can successfully fly fish. Some of the most important pieces of equipment are the flies used as bait. Such flies can be found in any specialized shop in thousands of models. Knowing which one to buy will relate to the fish that people are trying to catch and the type of water the person will be fishing in, be it saltwater or freshwater.

Fly fishing flies are unique and are probably the most important part of equipment necessary. The ?caring? process starts after buying them. People have to be careful not to crush or entangle them as they are delicate and fragile. People should be sure they are kept in appropriate fly boxes and they should be thoroughly dried after they are used. A good method of drying them is attaching them somewhere so that they will air-dry. Failure to take this action may lead to misshapen flies or rusty hooks. If the fly box gets wet, it is a good idea to remove and dry all of the flies from the box.

People must be very careful with their flies. As they have practically no weight at all they can easily be crushed. If they are crushed, people should try holding them over steam from hot water to help them regain their shape. If they are crushed beyond repair, they must be replaced.

Fly fishing is a beautiful sport that can lead to much satisfaction, but it?s also hard to learn and people can only grasp its secrets in time. Be sure to experiment with different flies and movements of the fly in order to be successful.

Did You Know That Fishing Could Save Your Life?

Who hasn't had a thought of just kicking back and taking up fishing as a sport or hobby? (They give a lot of money and other prizes in those fishing tournaments.) If not, it's time you did some thinking about it. Fishing is relaxing and it gets you out into the beautiful great outdoors where you feel as if you're one with nature. (Now I know you like that idea.) I find that there's nothing as great as sitting on the bank of a creek under a willow tree and leaving the stress of the world behind. This alone can add years to your life. There is also the exercise you get from walking to the fishing spot. I personally don't care much for just exercising to be exercising but a brisk walk to a fishing hole is great. It's balm for the soul and in today's stressful world, it's a great way to let off a little steam. It's also a great hobby for those of all ages. Kids love to fish, so after you've been out a few times, take a kid along for a day of fishing fun. You will find a great deal of joy in introducing a kid to the joy of fishing.

If you've never tried fishing, you don't know what you're missing. Not only does it bring you closer to nature, there's the thrill of the catch. You simply can't imagine the thrill of standing on the bank of a pond or stream, your rod bending under the weight of a good catch. This one's a fighter and you take your time, allowing the fish to tire itself out before reeling it into shore. When you finally land it, you realize you've just caught the biggest fish of your life. It's an awesome feeling and one you'll never know unless you give fishing a try. You could try Fly Fishing in a rushing cold water stream. I know you have seen video or pictures and wondered what that would be like. How about a trip to Alaska and do some Salmon fishing, where the big ones are, and again the beautiful nature that would surround you.

Now that your interest has been piqued, and you know it is, you may be thinking that you don't have a clue about how to fish or you have only a limited experience. If that's the case, the tips you will find here will help. If you'd like to learn how to fish or get better at it, and you know you would, there are a few things you can do:

- Do your research on the sport of fishing. The local library has many how-to books and fishing magazines. There are many resources in the library that will help educate you on the sport of fishing.

- Go online. There are hundreds of websites that give instructions on fishing gear, baits and where and when to fish and where to find the species you are aiming for.

- Family members or friends who are avid angler get them to take you along the next time they go fishing, experience is a good teacher. For this you will need some basic equipment, rod, reel, hooks and bait. Do not buy a lot of expensive gear until you determine whether or not you enjoy fishing.

- If you wish to take professional fishing lessons, check with guide services and fishing stores in your area. They can often provide you with the names of professionals who will teach you how to fish.

- Check with your local Conservation or wildlife service. Often there is a fishing day where beginners gather to learn the basics of fishing.

There is not a bad time to fish and you never know what you might catch. Certain species are more active near dawn and dusk when they feed. Others will bite any time of the day. Some species are more active at certain times of the year, but really you can fish all year round. If you live in a climate that has four seasons, you might consider taking up ice fishing at some point. Really the time of year you should fish all depends on the species you are after.

Fishing licenses are required in most locations. These can be purchased at fishing tackle stores, Conservation and Wildlife Services. Cost varies by location. Fishing licenses are not usually required for children. Check always the regulations. If you are planning to fish on private property, be sure to get permission from the owner. Entering someone's property to fish without permission is classed as trespassing. Be courteous and if permission is denied, move on.

If you follow the advice in this article, you will soon be enjoying fishing as a sport or hobby. If you enjoy the sport initially, you can hone your skills and move on to more advanced techniques and fishing tournaments.
